In 2019, Hewlett Packard Enterprise released a major update to its server series, including an update to the density-optimized DL325 model.
DL325 Characteristic:
- single-socket platform 1U high,
- 2nd generation AMD EPYC processors,
- 8 – 64 cores,
- new PCIe 4.0 and NVMe U3 standards are supported.
HPE later announced the development of an improved series of server solutions. However, there are quite a few serious changes in the latest platforms. The update was named Gen10 Plus v2.
Gen 10 vs Gen 10 Plus
Main Gen 10 Plus feature is an extended version of storage, achieved by installing disk baskets in several rows. Compartments for baskets can be arranged in three rows one after another. As a result, up to 24 SFF disks can be placed on one 1U platform.
The server includes an AMD EPYC socket with 16 DDR4 DIMM slots (+ support for DDR4-3200 slots). The SmartArray SAS controller in this version of the server is located next to the processor (leading to an increased space for expansion slots in the rear of the case). Due to the support of the 7002 series CPU, 2x increase in device performance is available.
Another important feature of this version is the PCIe4.0 interface. It became possible to run dual-port adapters with speeds of up to 100 Gbit/s per port or network cards with a throughput of 200 Gbit/s.

HP DL325 Gen 10 Plus Specifications
High power performance of the HPE DL325 Gen10 Plus is achieved due to:
- integrated internal design of devices,
- highly efficient Zen 2 and Zen 3 processor microarchitecture,
- the correct and rational combination of architecture components with an efficient cooling system.
High level of security is ensured by pre-installed software and iLO5 controller, which perform the following functions:
- control all other elements of the device,
- make a detailed plan for successful and full-scale monitoring in remote mode with the help of an error prevention system (InfoSight machine learning methods).
Processors
A significant increase in system performance is achieved due to the AMD EPYC Zen2 and Zen3 CPUs included in the basic package. These processors are created using a 7-nanometer process technology.
The most productive and correspondingly expensive assembly is based on the 64-core 7742. The cheapest assembly contains the 8-core 7262.
Heat dissipation varies from 120W to 225W.
The V2 modification is currently offered in two options:
- Pre-installed 7413 – 24-core chips with a maximum clock frequency of 3.5 GHz.
- Pre-installed 7763 – 64-core chips with a maximum clock frequency of 3.6 GHz.
Memory
Up to 16 HPE DDR4 SmartMemory sticks operating at 3200 MT/s can be installed due to 8 channels with 2DIMM distribution per channel.
The maximum capacity of one strip of RDIMM modules is 64 GB. The maximum LDIMM memory capacity is up to 2 TB (16 modules of 128 GB each).
ECC memory protection technology, which is designed to automatically recognize and correct bit errors, is also supported by Hewlett Packard Enterprise server platforms.
Cooling
The heat generated by the CPU is removed by the radiator. Heat dissipation is a top priority in Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, providing a reliable and efficient solution, especially when developing the optimized density DL series.
As for the active cooling system, it includes from 5 to 7 single-rotor fans. The possibility of hot replacement depends on their configuration.
Power supplies
Uninterrupted power supply is ensured by two HPE Flexible Slot power supplies installed in the server case (efficiency up to 96%). The power depends on the configuration:
- Platinum class – 500 W;
- 800-watt Platinum and Titanium units;
- Platinum at 1600 W.
Power supplies features:
- Provide redundancy.
- Support hot-swappability.
- Have a low noise level from the installed cooling system.
Disk subsystem
Storage capacity up to 357 TB (compact 1U form factor) has been increased thanks to the three-row layout of disk space. Convenient and quick access to hard drives is provided by a retractable design that lifts the box with the far front compartments at a slight angle.
Several types of chassis are provided for the convenience of customization:
- 3 uniform baskets for 8 NMVe solid-state drives of the U3 standard with a total number of SFF disks up to 24;
- for 4LFF SAS/SATA (in the front part) with an additional compartment for 4LFF and space for an optical drive (in the second line);
- double-row disk system (in the front part 8SFF NVMe U3 specifications are possible; in the second line – 2SFF + two SSD uFF and an optical drive or the same drives);
- compartments for 12 LFF hard drives, distributed in three rows of 4 full-size disks;
- three rows with baskets on 8SFF = total 24SFF SAS/SATA;
- in the first row there is space for 8SFF + 2 SFF or NVMe, in the second row there is an optical drive and space for dual uFF.
The new NVMe U3 standard in assemblies allows you to extend the life of drives and significantly increase the data transfer speed.
Controllers
Smart Array P408i-a RAID controller with 2 GB of flash memory, supporting RAID arrays 0, 1, 5, 10, 50, 60 (+SAS interface) performs storage management function by default.
HPE Smart Array P816i-a or E208i-a (as discrete controllers) can be installed in order to increase the range of functions and ensure more stable and efficient work with large amounts of data.
Network connection
Standard option includes:
- a high-speed OCP 3.0 network card on the rear panel,
- 4 standard Ethernet ports,
- dedicated Gigabit iLO Remote Management port.
New technology makes it possible to increase the data transfer speed over the network up to 200 Gbit/s via a single-port adapter.
Up to 3 expansion slots, the interface of which now operates on the x16 PCI Express 4.0 bus can be placed on the rear panel. These slots provide throughput up to 16 GT/s per line. As a result, it becomes possible to expand storage using NVMe SSDs.
There are also two USB 3.1 ports and an analog VGA port on the rear panel.
2021 modification: DL325 Gen10 Plus V2
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise has released an announcement of an update of the line of existing Gen10 Plus generation servers in 2021.
The changes are not very significant, but they are still worth considering:
- data center compatibility has been improved due to a shortened chassis,
- for more reliable management of data storage systems, three-mode controllers were included,
- support for the third generation of EPYC server chips,
- official software updates.
