The Dell PowerEdge R640 server can accommodate up to 24 DDR4 DIMM memory sticks supporting RDIMM/LRDIMM, with speeds up to 2666 MT/s, and a total capacity of up to 3TB. Alternatively, up to 12 NVDIMM modules with a capacity of up to 192GB can be installed. Only registered DDR4 DIMM modules with ECC are supported. We'll demonstrate how to upgrade the memory on this server. Since it's a dual-processor server, you should add memory in pairs to ensure that each processor has an equal amount of memory. We'll add two DIMM sticks to each server.
You'll need to turn off the server, slide it out of the rack, and remove the lid. Unused DIMM slots are covered by blanks.
Currently, there are two sticks per processor in the server, each being 64GB. We'll need to add two more.
You can refer to the inside of the server's lid for the memory module installation sequence. It is recommended to install in the order of 1, 2, 4 for each processor. Slot numbers are indicated on the same diagram. The slots for the first processor have a "A" prefix, while the second one has a "B".
To access the blanks and install the memory, you'll need to remove the air duct located behind the fans.
Next, insert the sticks into the fourth slot.
Slot numbers can also be found on the air duct you've just removed.
Mission accomplished. Memory has been added.
Now, reinstall the air duct and verify the slot numbers.
Assemble the server, turn it on, and check its performance.
